New Chelsea signing Filip Jorgensen names Blues legend his idol

Chelsea's latest acquisition Filip Jorgensen has opened up on his admiration for club legend Petr Cech. The young goalkeeper has also revealed that the Blues were one of his favorite sides while growing up.

The Sweden-born Denmark youth international has joined the Blues in a deal worth a reported £20.7 million from Villarreal CF. He signed a seven-year contract with the Blues and also joined the club's training session in Atlanta on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the Blues' website following his move to Stamford Bridge, the 22-year-old said, as quoted by The Chelsea Chronicle:

“I always liked watching Chelsea because I watched a lot of Petr Cech growing up, so Chelsea were one of my favourite teams to follow.”

Chelsea have struggled in the goalkeeping department in recent years since the departure of Thibaut Courtois in 2018. They splashed a world record £71.6 million fee for a goalkeeper to bring Kepa Arrizabalaga but the Spaniard failed to live up to his price tag.

Edouard Mendy was then signed for £22 million from Stade Rennais FC in 2020. He also departed after a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge, featuring in 105 games. Last summer, the Blues signed Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic from Brighton & Hove Albion and MLS side New England Revolution respectively, who shared goalkeeping duties between them.

Filip Jorgensen will have to fend off competition from Sanchez and Petrovic for a starting spot. Kepa Arrizabalaga has also returned from his loan spell at Real Madrid but the Blues are reportedly looking to offload the 29-year-old.

Jorgensen has been on the books of Villarreal CF since 2017 and enjoyed his breakthrough season last year. He made 37 appearances for the Yellow Submarine in 2023-24 season, keeping six clean sheets.

Former Chelsea star slams the club for their handling of Enzo Fernandez racism row

Former Chelsea defender Michael Duberry has slammed the Blues for how they handled Enzo Fernandez's racism row. The Blues seem to have accepted an apology from the Argentina international for his video singing a racist and discriminatory chant with his international teammates.

Fernandez was caught singing a chant with racist and transphobic connotations in a social media post following their Copa America win. It caused a major outrage from the fans as well as Chelsea's French contingent.

Duberry has been left infuriated by the club accepting Fernandes' apology for the incident. He believes that the club should have dealt with the situation in a more serious manner. Duberry said, as quoted by talkSPORT:

"I think it’s pretty weak. They could have put out more of a statement, so I’m not really satisfied with it – not that I’m looking for the player personally, but the crime that’s happened deserves a bit. A contribution, a little bit of money to a campaign is not really satisfactory in my opinion."

Fernandes has struggled to live up to his massive £106.8 million transfer fee at Chelsea following his switch from SL Benfica in January 2023. He has made 62 appearances for the Blues till date, contributing with seven goals and five assists.
