Manchester City continued their impressive form in the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, October 20. After the game, Pep Guardiola compared his team's recent habit of scoring last-minute winners to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

City received a significant boost ahead of the game as their main title rivals, Arsenal, suffered a shock defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday. However, the reigning Premier League champions found themselves trailing in the seventh minute to an early goal from Jorgen Strand Larsen.

True to their form, City remained patient and equalized in the 33rd minute through a stunning Josko Gvardiol striker. Just as Wolves seemed to have earned a point with a resolute performance, John Stones delivered the decisive blow by heading in the winner during the fifth minute of stoppage time.

This marks City’s second late rescue of the season, having previously salvaged a point against Arsenal with another dramatic late goal from Stones. After the game, Guardiola said that his team doesn’t typically rely on late winners, unlike Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool did during his time as manager.

“We are not used to winning games at the end, like Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool it happened many times. It is a good flavour for us," he said (via GOAL).

Under Klopp’s leadership, the Reds scored plenty of late goals and staged numerous comebacks, which became a hallmark of the intense rivalry between his team and Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The win over Wolves moved Manchester City three points ahead of Arsenal, though they still trail Liverpool by one point eight games into the season.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola shares his opinion on the controversial winner

City secured all three points at Molineux Stadium on Sunday, but John Stones’ late winner came with a touch of controversy. Phil Foden’s corner found Stones, who rose highest to head the ball into the net. However, the goal was initially ruled offside as Bernardo Silva was positioned in front of goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Confusion spread throughout the stadium about whether the goal would be disallowed. The uncertainty grew further when referee Chris Kavanagh was instructed to review the goal via the VAR monitor. However, after only a few seconds of reviewing the replay, Kavanagh pointed to the center circle, confirming that the goal stood and that Silva’s positioning did not interfere with Jose Sa.

Guardiola agreed with the on-field decision and shared his thoughts on the controversy surrounding the winner.

"Of course I didn’t understand it. Linesman, I don’t know the reason why he did it [disallow the goal]. But Bernardo isn’t disturbing the position. It was difficult in the first moment. Today in modern football they starve the keeper. In the moment what happened [Jose] Sa had the perfect vision. The taker from Phil [Foden] and the header [by John Stones] were magnificent,” he said (via Mirror).

Manchester City will next host Sparta Prague at home in the UEFA Champions League, before taking on bottom-placed Southampton at the Etihad.
