Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has named his club's all-time XI, leaving out striker Luis Suarez but including Ian Rush, the Reds' all-time top scorer, albeit expectedly.

With 69 trophies, Liverpool are the most successful English side, with their 19 league titles only second to Manchester United's 20. Over the years, many top players have turned out for the club.

On the Overlap's Stick to Football podcast (as per Sport Bible), Carragher set about naming the Reds' all-time XI, with only captain Virgil van Dijk and attacker Mohamed Salah from the current team making the cut.

At goal, he picked Ray Clemence over current custodian Alisson Becker, explaining::

"I would go with Ray Clemence just over Alisson (Becker), just for the fact he won so many trophies."

In defence, he excluded himself as he went with:

"I'll go with (Phil) Neal due to the fact he's won four European Cups. I would go with Virgil van Dijk and Alan Hansen – that would be a great partnership (at centre-back).
"I'm going to go for Nicol at left-back. He had a great combination with the guy in front of him who’s going to play, John Barnes in that late 80's team. Nicol was a player a little similar to me – right back, centre-back, left back, but he was that good for Liverpool."

Carragher continued:

"Graeme Souness has to be in central midfield alongside Steven Gerrard. On the right, there's two options. Before Mo Salah joined the club, Ian Callaghan."

He went with club top scorer Rush and Kenny Dalglish, who narrowly pipped Suarez, up front, explaining:

"Kenny Dalglish has got to play (up front) and Ian Rush goes in because of what he won. If Luis Suarez would have won the league with Liverpool – he won one trophy. If he had a league title and a European Cup to his name, I would have put Suarez in.
"But you think about what Rush did in those cup finals against Everton – I was crying on the way home!"

Rush scored a record 346 times for the Reds, winning five league and two UEFA Champions League (then called the European Champion Clubs' Cup) titles, among others.

New Liverpool boss Arne Slot
New Liverpool boss Arne Slot

Liverpool have made a good start to life under new boss Arne Slot. After winning their opening three Premier League games without conceding, they slumped to a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest.

However, they returned to winning ways with an emphatic come-from-behind 3-1 win at AC Milan in their UEFA Champions League opener on Wednesday (September 18).

Slot's side next take on Bournemouth at home in the Premier League on Saturday (September 21). They're fourth in the standings, with nine points from three games, three behind leaders Manchester City.
