Former striker Marco van Basten has blasted Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag for signing midfielder Manuel Ugarte from PSG. According to the former Dutch international, the manager has made wrong choices by investing in players who aren't good enough.

Van Basten's comments come following Manchester United's 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at home over the weekend. United have managed two league wins this term and are 13th after six games.

Ten Hag is under immense pressure, and his future hangs in the balance. Despite being heavily backed in the transfer window with new singings Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte, there has been little improvement in performance.

Speaking on his fellow countryman's predicament at Old Trafford, Van Basten criticised the signing of Ugarte, 23 (via the Daily Mail):

"I saw a new player walking around at Manchester United, (Manuel) Ugarte, for €50million (£42.3m), how is this guy walking around there?" the Ajax legend shared on Ziggo Sport. It's idiotic how much (Ten Hag) has decided to invest in players who are not even good."

The Red Devils paid a reported £50.8 million to Paris Saint Germain for the Uruguayan midfielder. He was brought in as backup for Casemiro, but in two games, the 23-year-old is yet to impress.

He had a shaky performance on his debut against Twente in a 1-1 Europa League home draw. Ugarte's performance was also below par in his first start for the club against Tottenham, getting substituted in the second half for Christian Eriksen.

Marco van Basten questions quality of players at Manchester United

Marco van Basten questioned the quality of players at United. He described players like Marcus Rashford and Casemiro as not good enough for the club, while commending Bruno Fernandes and Andre Onana.

"Name me one top player at Manchester United? At every club, you see a top player. (Marcus) Rashford is very bad. Bruno Fernandes is a good player. (Andre) Onana is a good goalkeeper. That's it," van Basten said.
"Casemiro is done. (Alejandro) Garnacho is a decent player. But nobody carries that team," he added.

Ten Hag will have to ensure that his side perform better in their next outing. They next face Portuguese side FC Porto away in the Europa League on Thursday, October 3.
