Former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has slammed Manchester United after their 1-1 draw with FC Twente in the Europa League. The Red Devils dominated the proceedings at home and scored first through a Christian Eriksen curler in the 35th minute.
However, Manchester United failed to create more impact and were unable to score another goal. Sam Lammers eventually found the equalizer for Twente in the 68th minute, after he dispossessed Christian Eriksen, and the game tapered out into a draw.
Speaking about United's performance on talkSPORT, Gabriel Agbonlahor slammed the club:
"I look at last season and yes, winning a trophy is amazing, but this is Manchester United finishing 8th in the Premier League. And then after the season's finished you're praising the fans and you're trying to like kid them on as if you've had a great season.
"This season, Manchester United have played Fulham, Brighton, Southampton, Palace, and FC Twente, they've won two. Their last nine games in Europe, [they've] won one, drawn three, [and] lost five. It's not good enough and you don't see any progression."
He went on to hint at a potential sacking coming for United manager Erik ten Hag, and backed Ruud van Nistelrooy to replace him. He said:
"If I'm Van Nistelrooy, I'm just thinking, 'Hmm, this is my job, this is. [I'm] just gonna bide my time.' Around Christmas time, [if] this carries on, I'm sure Van Nistelrooy will come in and take the job."
Erik ten Hag only recently signed a contract extension in the summer, and he will be hoping he can keep his job and conclude the season with a trophy or two.
Erik ten Hag slams Manchester United for poor clinical ability against Twente
Manchester United had 19 shots in the Europa League game against Twente, but only five were on target. Their visitors were more clinical, with seven shots on goal and three on target.
Erik ten Hag was not pleased about the poor finishing from his players, and he made it clear in a statement to the press after the game. The manager said (via GOAL):
"We have seen, again, you have to keep going for the whole game; once you are 1-0 up you have to keep going and go for the second [goal].... We have to be more clinical in such situations."
Manchester United will hope they can find their clinical edge this weekend (September 29) when they face Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.
