Lionel Messi displayed an uncharacteristic attribute in Inter Miami's draw against Charlotte FC, according to MLS expert Andrew Wiebe. The Herons could only manage a 1-1 draw against the North Carolina club, with the Argentinean securing a point with a late strike.

Miami have been in inspired form this season so far and are leading the Eastern Conference table after 31 games. They have all but qualified for the playoffs, and also have one hand on the Supporters Shield.

With Lionel Messi back in the fold after a two-month layoff due to injury, few would bet against the Florida side from going all the way this season. However, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is yet to hit top form in recent games, as he slowly regains his full fitness.

He was certainly not at his best against Charlotte, although it was an improvement from his performance against New York City FC last weekend. However, the Argentinean also missed quite a few chances against the Crown.

Speaking on MLS Wrap-Up, Wiebe pointed out that the 37-year-old couldn't connect with the ball for much of the game.

“That chance looks like money in the bank when Messi is in behind from the backline, he picks his spot but couldn’t quite connect with the ball for so much of today, it was really out of character,” said Wiebe.

It is important to mention that while Lionel Messi did appear a little rusty, he scored a beautiful left-foot curler from 25 yards out to secure a point for Inter Miami.

Inter Miami need Lionel Messi firing on all cylinders

Last season, Lionel Messi marked his arrival in the MLS by helping Inter Miami win the Leagues Cup, their first-ever silverware. While the Herons have managed well in the Argentinean's absence this campaign, he remains their most important player.

The six-time European Golden Shoe winner has already scored 17 goals and set up 12 more from 19 games across competitions this season. However, Inter Miami have now registered three draws in a row, which will be a cause of concern for fans.

With Messi expected to regain full fitness soon, the Florida-based side will be optimistic about their chances this season. It is quite likely that the Argentinean will return to his dazzling best in time for the MLS Audi Cup playoffs.

Inter Miami are also on the threshold of history; they need three more wins to break the record for most points in the MLS. That record currently belongs to New England Revolution, who registered 74 points in 2021. The Herons are currently on 65 points, with three games left to play.
