"I've still got a lot to learn" – Chelsea star on being asked to play in a different position by new manager Enzo Maresca

Chelsea captain Reece James has opened up on playing in a new role under new club manager Enzo Maresca, revealing his excitement about the 2024-25 season.

Earlier this Wednesday (July 24), the west London side recorded a 2-2 pre-season friendly stalemate against EFL League One outfit Wrexham. Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott scored a goal each between Christopher Nkunku and Lesley Ugochukwu's goals in the contest.

James, 24, started the friendly game in an inverted full-back role against the Welsh team. He completed 44 of 46 passes, created two chances, won one of one tackle and two of six overall duels, and hit the woodwork with his single attempted shot in 45 minutes of action.

After the end of the match, James opined on his outing (h/t Mirror):

"The early days have been very enjoyable. It's a lot different to what I'm used to but I think with how I play it suits me quite well. I've still got a lot to learn for what he wants in the role but I'm excited and I can't wait."

James, who made just 11 appearances for Chelsea last term, added:

"It's great to be back out there. I've been sidelined for so long in the last two years and to be back out there with my team is an amazing feeling. It's always a dream come true [to be captain], it's a great feeling to step out and represent the club and to have the armband on... it's a special moment and something I dreamt of since I was a young boy."

Commenting on Chelsea's pre-season plans, the right-back added:

"I think [we need to] build game on game, take one step at a time and take each training session as it comes and take pre-season and hopefully come the start of the season, we're in a very good place."

La Liga giants keen to sign Chelsea star

According to Football Espana, Atletico Madrid are confident about signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer. However, their valuation of £17 million is well below the Blues' demand of £34 million.

Gallagher, 24, relished an excellent season for his boyhood club last campaign. He started 46 of his 50 appearances across competitions for his side, recording seven goals and nine assists in the process.

Chelsea, on the other hand, currently have Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as notable midfield options.
