Carlos Alcaraz said all eyes were on Spain to bring the Euro 2024 trophy home following his Wimbledon victory against World No. 2 Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard defeated the Serbian 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in straight sets to lift his second consecutive Wimbledon title on July 14.
The World No. 3 reached the final after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final. Djokovic, on the flip side, had defeated Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-final in straight sets to book a spot in the final. He had reached the semi-final after receiving a walkover due to Alex de Minaur pulling out of the tournament due to a hip injury.
The clash between Djokovic and Alcaraz was a repeat of last year's final, in which the latter had emerged victorious after five sets. However, this year's victory was far more convincing for the Spaniard.
During the trophy presentation ceremony, the 21-year-old was asked about Spain's chances of defeating England in the final of Euro 2024. The Spaniard was also asked if he would be watching the match. Alcaraz iterated that he would be watching the clash with his team and added (via Madrid Xtra):
"I’ve already done my job, so let’s see the football."
The clash between England and Spain will be played in Berlin later tonight (July 14). It'll be the former's first-ever appearance in the final of a major international tournament on foreign soil.
Alcaraz had commented about Spain vs England Euro 2024 final after his semi-final game
The Spaniard had cheekily teased the English crowd after decimating Medvedev in the semi-final of the coveted tournament. With a sheepish smile, the World No. 3 had suggested that Sunday (July 14) would be a very lucky day for the Spanish people. He was alluding to La Roja's chances of winning Euro 2024.
He said:
"It is going to be a really good day for Spanish people as well with, you know, the Euro Cup."
He was booed following the remark. Sporting an embarrassing smile, Alcaraz added:
"I didn’t say Spain is going to win. I am just saying that it is going to be a really fun day!"
England reached the final after defeating Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final. Spain, after conceding first against France in the semi-final, defeated the former World Cup winners 2-1 to book their place in the final.
