Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has doubled down on his stance with regards to forward Steven Bergwijn, who has moved to Saudi Arabia. The Dutch forward left Ajax to join Al-Ittihad on transfer deadline day in a move that angered the manager.

Saudi Arabia has become an attractive option for players in Europe in recent years, particularly since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to the country. Saudi's biggest clubs conduct raids around Europe every transfer window, looking to sign quality players. However, Koeman believes the league is not up to scratch.

Ronald Koeman was fiercely critical of Bergwijn's switch as he declared the forward's international career to be over. The player responded defiantly, saying he considered it an honor to represent his country but did not wish to play under Koeman.

Koeman has now sent another message to Steven Bergwijn, suggesting that the move is financially motivated. He said (via NOS and Transfer News Live on X):

“It’s logical that Steven Bergwijn reacts to my words on his move to Saudi. But I stick to my words! Going to Saudi at 26… it’s not a transfer based on the sporting aspect.”

Bergwijn defended his decision to move to the Saudi club, saying he had been attracted to the project of the club by the caliber of their players. The likes of Karim Benzema, Fabinho, N'Golo Kante, and Moussa Diaby already represent the side, having all moved there from Europe.

Al-Ittihad signed Bergwijn on transfer deadline day as they sought to replace Jota, who left the side to join Rennes in France. They were linked with a move for FC Porto star Galeno before paying €25 million to land Steven Bergwijn from Ajax.

Ronald Koeman set for surprise as star forward nears Brazil switch - Reports

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman may be in for a shock as star forward Memphis Depay is closing in on a move to the Brazilian top-flight. ESPN reports that the 30-year-old is set to join Corinthians on a two-year deal, and will complete the transfer soon.

Depay has been without a club since leaving Atletico Madrid in the summer after his contract with the Spanish side expired. The forward managed nine goals and two assists in 12 starts (31 games) for Diego Simeone's side in the 2023-24 season before leaving the club.

Ronald Koeman considers Depay a key player for the Netherlands side. The player has registered 46 goals and 32 assists in 98 international appearances. He was not included in the squad for this month's games, having not played any football since Euro 2024, but has the second-most international goals for the Netherlands.
