Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has opened up about Ilkay Gundogan's future amid rumors of his potential exit. He said that he spoke to the German, who is likely to stay at the club.

Reports emerged on Saturday (August 17) via Sport that Gundogan is looking to leave the Blaugrana this summer. The report stated that the club are also open to selling him due to their financial issues and his age. The speculation further grew after the 33-year-old wasn't in the squad for Barca's 2024-25 La Liga opener against Valencia.

However, manager Hansi Flick has said that Gundogan was out due to some discomfort. About his potential exit from Barcelona, Flick said (via Fabrizio Romano):

“I think he’s gonna end up staying at Barça. He was out tonight as he had some discomfort…
“I spoke to Ilkay, but that stays between us as it’s private conversation."

Gundogan arrived at Barcelona last summer on a free transfer after an illustrious seven-year stint with Manchester City. He has made 51 appearances across competitions for the Spanish giants, scoring five goals and providing 14 assists.

Gundogan's contract is set to expire next summer. Hence, if they don't extend his contract, the Blaugrana could lose him for free next year.

Hansi Flick on Barcelona's win over Valencia in La Liga opener

Hansi Flick's first competitive game in charge of Barcelona saw them register an impressive win against Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium in LaLiga. The hosts took the lead in the 44th minute through Hugo Duro but Robert Lewandowski restored penalty in the first-half stoppage time.

The Polish striker then converted from the penalty spot in the 49th minute after Raphinha was clipped in the box by Cristhian Mosquera. Both sides created plenty of chances but failed to convert them as it ended 2-1 in favor of Barca.

After the game, manager Hansi Flick said (via Barca Universal):

"We knew how difficult it was going to be to play Valencia. Their first half was good, but we're happy with the three points. Before the match I told the players that we had to fight, because the atmosphere in this stadium is unbelievable."

Flick added that this side need to improve, saying:

"We have a lot to improve. He fought hard, were intense, and we deserve the 3 points. We have to perform like we did in the second half. I'm satisfied with that. We're focusing on that."

Barcelona will next face Athletic Club at home on Saturday, August 24.
