Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has ridiculed himself after scoring a remarkable freekick at Old Trafford during a charity match on Saturday, September 7. The United Legends played Celtic Legends in a charity match that raised over £1 million for the Manchester United Foundation.

Rooney played alongside former teammates, including Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes, and Dimitar Berbatov. The ex-England international was one of the best players on the pitch, scoring a brilliant freekick that Celtic Legends goalkeeper Artur Boruc could only watch hit the back of the net in the 42nd minute.

Speaking after the game, Wayne Rooney ridiculed himself with some humor, telling MUTV (via Metro):

"Yeah, I’m alright with the ball at my feet. It’s just the running part! I was tempted to shoot more but wanted to keep the ball as well."

The game eventually ended 1-1, with Celtic legend Gary Hooper netting the equalizer just after the hour mark to push the game into penalties. The Scottish giants won the shootout 5-4.

Wayne Rooney opened up about "scary" feelings ahead of Old Trafford return for Manchester United charity game

Wayne Rooney is now the manager of Plymouth Argyle, but the task in the dugout is not easy for the Manchester United legend. They are 22nd in the Championship after four games with two draws and as many losses.

However, Rooney got the chance to play football at Old Trafford for the first time in years. Ahead of kick-off, he spoke about the opportunity, saying (via Metro):

"It’s a bit scary to be honest. It’s my first game for a long time. But no, I’m looking forward to it, being back on the pitch and seeing the fans again will be great. It’s always great to see the team-mates you played with and some players who I didn’t play with as well."

The Manchester United legend also hailed the foundation for raising over £1 million for charity, adding:

"The Manchester United Foundation has done a great job. Obviously I’ve been involved with it for a long time and seeing it with the work its done first-hand, it’s great. Any time we can give to try and help with that… it’s always great to do that. It’s a great cause and hopefully it helps a lot of young children."

Wayne Rooney will return to Plymouth Argyle and prepare his side for a clash against table-toppers Sunderland on September 14.
