Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul has responded to questions regarding the future of Lionel Messi with regards to playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 37-year-old has been plagued by injuries in recent months, leading to concern over his potential participation in the next edition of the Mundial.

Messi captained La Albiceleste to glory in the 2024 Copa America, their third successive major trophy since 2021. His contribution to the success was minimal, as he battled injuries throughout the tournament and afterwards as well. The forward returned to action with Inter Miami for the first time since July at the weekend (September 14), and he scored twice for the side.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul spoke with CNN about the veteran forward, pointing out that he scored a brace on his first appearance since July. He also spoke about the possibility of the Inter Miami superstar appearing in the World Cup with the Argentina national team in two years' time.

"Messi just came back and scored two goals. A 37-year-old player who hadn’t played since the Copa América due to an ankle problem returns and is still very different from the rest, so I hope we can enjoy him for many more years, and for me, it’s a pleasure."
"If he will be at the World Cup 2026? Let’s hope so. The truth is, I don’t think even he knows yet. I think it will depend on how he feels physically, but obviously for us, we hope so, because, as I said, he is very, very important not just on the field, but off it as well."

Lionel Messi was at his mercurial best for Argentina, winning the tournament's Golden Ball as they won the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The forward will be 39 when the next edition of the tournament takes place in North America, but could yet make it to the tournament.

Argentina star Lionel Messi set to appear for Inter Miami in Atlanta United clash

Lionel Messi is set to feature in a second game for Inter Miami as they prepare to face Atlanta United in the MLS on Wednesday, September 18. He recently returned to action for the Herons, scoring a brace in his first game back against Philadelphia Union as they won 3-1.

Messi last featured for Inter Miami in June before heading to the Copa America, where he represented Argentina, in the summer. The forward injured his ankle in July and only returned for the game against Philadelphia Union.

Lionel Messi will be keen to continue to build up his fitness when his side travels to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium looking to claim all three points. The Herons are closing in on the Supporters Shield, having already sealed passage to the playoffs.
