Former Everton chairman and football pundit Keith Wyness has tipped Michael Carrick to take over as the next Manchester United manager. He believes that the former Red Devils player will be a good appointment based on his time with Middlesbrough.

Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness opined that Thomas Tuchel would be a good manager to replace Erik ten Hag. But he expects the club to appoint Carrick as he is a former Manchester United player. He said (via Metro):

"There are various rumours whether they will go for like a Thomas Tuchel or will it be a Michael Carrick and have more of a managerial coach type situation rather than a Tuchel-type bigger name. I think they might go for the second route and try and get the Man United ethos back to what it was before with an ex-player like Carrick managing the squad.
"He’s proven to be a very good manager, so that’s where I think they may go. But no one knows at the moment which way Ratcliffe is going to jump. They are starting to reap the rewards of a very bad, difficult off-season when everybody thought Ten Hag was going to be sacked. So all these sorts of things are coming home to roost. It’s a bad issue for Man United. We are already seven games into the season and it’s not looking good."

Erik ten Hag is currently under pressure at Manchester United, with the club enduring a tough start to the new season. He was reportedly close to being sacked in the summer as well, but eventually had his contract extended by the club.

Erik ten Hag confirms Manchester United held talks with Thomas Tuchel

Erik ten Hag, while in a conversation with NOS in the summer, revealed that Manchester United held talks with Thomas Tuchel in the summer. He also disclosed how the club approached him on his holiday in Ibiza to sign an extension and said (via GOAL):

"Last week they suddenly showed up on my doorstep, with the message that they would like to continue with me. It is very wise that you evaluate things and then make decisions, as that is how it should be in any organisation. The new club management of Manchester United has also done this. They took extensive time to evaluate everything.
"They also told me that they have spoken to Thomas Tuchel. It is no secret to me that they have spoken to several trainers. In the Netherlands that is not done, it is not allowed at all if you still have a sitting trainer. In England the rules are a bit different, but in the end they came to the conclusion that they already had the best trainer. They came to Ibiza with that message."

Erik ten Hag won the FA Cup with Manchester United last season after a dismal eighth-placed finish in the Premier League. He was thus entrusted with another season at the helm of affairs.

However, things have not started well this season, and they are sitting 14th in the league table. They have won just thrice across competitions this season and are yet to register a win in the Europa League, having been held to draws by FC Porto and FC Twente.
