Liverpool suffer blow as manager rules out exit of top target

Liverpool have been dealt a transfer blow as Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe ruled out the exit of English winger Anthony Gordon this summer. The Reds reportedly had Gordon on their transfer wishlist as an option to bolster their attacking department.

The 23-year-old traveled to Germany for Euro 2024, but didn't get the opportunity to make an impact, making just one substitute appearance for the Three Lions.

Gordon had an impressive 2023-24 season with Newcastle United after joining the club from Everton. He scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in 35 league outings last season, stepping into the limelight with his pace and quality on the flanks.

According to The Guardian, the Reds and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Gordon this summer.

However, if the words of Eddie Howe are anything to go by, neither Liverpool nor PSG will get the chance to sign the Newcastle winger. The Magpies manager spoke about Anthony Gordon, who is still on vacation, during pre-season training and said (via The Guardian):

“I’d welcome Anthony back with three arms if I had them. He’s an integral part of what we’re doing.”

Talking about Gordon's future at Newcastle, Howe said:

"He’s such an important player for us. We didn’t want to lose anybody. Why would we want to lose our best players? We fought really hard to make the right decisions but in those last few weeks it was very, very difficult."

Journalist discusses Liverpool youngster's future at Anfield

According to journalist David Lynch, Arne Slot's appointment as Liverpool manager could be an opportunity for Fabio Carvalho to stake his claim for a spot in the first team. The 21-year-old forward rarely played for the first team while Jurgen Klopp was in charge, making just 13 Premier League appearances since his 2022 move.

Lynch told Anfield Index (via Empire of the Kop):

"It’s a new opportunity here with Arne Slot, and the word from the player’s camp was that he was just coming back to see how things are and to put his head down and push the case that he should be part of that first-team squad... His ideal situation would be to make an impact on the new manager and be in and around the first-team squad."

The versatile forward will be hoping he can add to his number of Premier League appearances by impressing the Liverpool coaching staff this pre-season.
