Liverpool great Jamie Carragher has urged his former team to launch a permanent move to rope in Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon.

Gordon, 23, has emerged as a transfer target for the Reds over the last few weeks following his fine exploits in the 2023-24 season. He was also allegedly linked with a £75 million move to the Anfield outfit past month, but the potential deal ultimately failed to materialize.

During a recent interview with SPORTbible, Carragher was asked if Gordon would be a great addition to Liverpool's squad this summer. The 46-year-old responded:

"I think it would be a good signing, I'm a big fan. I can't believe he didn't get more opportunities for England. He's got blistering pace that leaves defenders for dead and not many players worldwide have that. I'm a big fan but I'm sure so many people are at other clubs as well, he's at a top club in Newcastle but there's been a lot of talk about whether he was offered to Liverpool."

Sharing further thoughts on the ex-Everton winger, Carragher added:

"There is a lot of time to get between now and the end of the window, I think a lot of teams will do business towards the end of the window because of the Euros. I do feel Liverpool still haven't replaced the pace they had in the attack when they had Sadio Mane and they need to replace that."

Gordon, who left Everton in a potential £45 million transfer in January 2023, helped Newcastle finish seventh in the Premier League table past season. He recorded 12 goals and 11 assists in 48 overall games.

In comparison, Reds forward Luis Diaz found the back of the net 13 times and laid out five assists in 51 overall appearances last term.

Liverpool keen to strengthen key position

According to The Athletic, Arne Slot's outfit have identified a target in the defensive midfield role. They are thought to be keeping close tabs on a specialist number six option from outside of the Premier League.

During the Reds' pre-season tour of the United States, Slot used the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai as a number six.

However, neither Gravenberch nor Szoboszlai are natural in the defensive midfield role. Moreover, with Wataru Endo set to turn 32 next February and Stefan Bajcetic still considered as just a youngster, the Merseyside club are in need of a first-team signing this summer.
