Harry Redknapp wants one of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard to replace Gareth Southgate as the next England manager. Southgate stepped down from his post following England's Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

Redknapp believes that the FA should now appoint a young coach to lead the current set of players. In his column for The Sun, the former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur manager admitted that he would be surprised if Lampard and Gerrard even get an interview.

However, he believes that should be in the running. He wrote:

"I've a message for all those who reckon the search for England's next manager is a two-horse race – you're bang on! And while we're at it, here's another... I bet very few of you have narrowed it down to the same couple of candidates as me. Well in my book it's a straight head-to-head, too.
"But I'm even more convinced that the men I see as obvious front-runners will be lucky to even get an interview. I doubt there are many who'd agree with me either, when I say the FA should look no further than Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard for the next Three Lions boss."

He continued:

"Either of them could do the job standing on their head. Mind you, plenty of people will insist there's no reason why they should because they've already written off both as failures."

Notably, Gareth Southgate guided the Three Lions to back-to-back Euro finals but lost to Italy and Spain, respectively.

Why Harry Redknapp is backing Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard for England

Harry Redknapp highlighted Frank Lampard's achievements at Chelsea. The former midfielder had led the Blues to an FA Cup final and a fourth-place finish in the Premier League. He also talked about Steven Gerrard's time at Rangers and wrote:

"Forgetting that Frank reached an FA Cup final and finished fourth in his first spell at Chelsea. Or the fact that Everton were in such a mess, he never had a prayer when he went there. There's every chance they'll gloss over Stevie's time at Rangers, despite their first title win in a decade – unbeaten as well – and say he was a flop at Aston Villa."

Gerrard is currently the Al Ettifaq manager, while Lampard has been without a permanent job since he was sacked by Everton in January 2023.
