Brazil star Vinicius Junior aims to win the 2024 Copa America following his stellar display in their 4-1 drubbing of Paraguay on Friday, June 28. The Real Madrid forward netted twice as the Selecao picked up their first win of the USA showpiece.
Having drawn 0-0 with Costa Rica in their opening game, Dorival Junior's side turned on the style in Nevada to revive their campaign and boost their progression hopes.
Vinicius, who was the driving force behind their emphatic victory today, revealed his belief of knowing that he could do more for Brazil, while asserting that their goal is to lift the title. Speaking to the press after the game, he said:
“I know that I can do better to help the national team, this team works hard every day to be able to put Brazil in the position it deserves. We will remain focused to reach this goal and the first step is to win the Copa America.”
The 23-year-old then reiterated that he always put his side above himself.
“I never ever play for myself, I always play for my team.”
After getting close on a few occasions, Brazil opened the scoring against Paraguay in the 35th minute through Vinicius, who delicately finished it under a diving Rodrigo Morinigo. After Savio (43') doubled their advantage from a defensive mistake by Paraguay, Vincius added a third in first-half stoppage time with a solid finish from close range.
Although Paraguay pulled one back through Omar Alderete (48'), Lucas Paqueta put the result to bed with a 65th-minute penalty. Brazil play Colombia on Tuesday in the battle to win Group D.
Brazil face tough clash against in-form Colombia
Brazil might be the favorites against Colombia, but this could be the strongest Colombian side they've met in a while. After all, Los Cafeteros are unbeaten in 25 games, and have won each of their last 10 in all competitions, including both their group fixtures at the 2024 Copa America so far.
Since back-to-back losses to Peru and Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers which ended their hopes of reaching the Qatar showpiece, Colombia have rebuilt themselves. Exercising a ruthless and fiery brand of attacking football, the Coffee Growers have looked unstoppable lately, even beating European heavyweights such as Germany and Spain in the last few months.
Brazil are a different kettle of fish, and Copa America is no friendly. But regardless, Colombia will be confident of their chances, and the Selecao can expect a tough contest on Tuesday.
