Liverpool have started the 2024-25 season strongly but have been sweating over the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk. All three players’ contracts expire at the end of the season, and journalist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the situation.

These three players have undoubtedly been the core of Liverpool’s successful era under Jürgen Klopp. Together, they have won the Premier League, Champions League, and several other trophies. They have also begun this season in fine form under new coach Arne Slot. The Dutch manager has leaned on their quality and experience to secure results, with Liverpool currently sitting at the top of the Premier League.

Of the three, Alexander-Arnold has been in the spotlight the most, with Real Madrid reportedly showing interest in signing him on a free transfer. Although the English defender has remained tight-lipped about his future, he has emphasized his ambition to achieve success and win trophies.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah has long been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, club captain Van Dijk is also expected to attract interest from several top European clubs.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the situation remains unchanged, with the club and players still in negotiations over potential new contracts.

“Look, for Trent, Salah and Van Dijk the situation remains the same. They are talking negotiating and discussing, but there has been no breakthrough in talks," he said (via TBR Football)

Romano also mentioned that all three players are open to reaching an agreement with the club. However, he acknowledged the need for patience as the club works through the complex situation.

"Let’s wait and see how it goes. I can guarantee that all three players are giving priority to Liverpool they will be happy to reach an agreement for Liverpool to stay, but it’s an important contract for long-term, for Van Dijk and Salah it could be the final big contracts of their career," he added.

For now, the trio will focus on the upcoming matches as Liverpool prepare for a demanding run of fixtures both domestically and in Europe after the international break.

Former Everton CEO offers his view on Liverpool’s difficult situation

It is certainly a tricky situation for the club, especially as they are focused on a rebuilding process under Arne Slot. With the three players eligible to negotiate with foreign clubs starting January 1, the Reds will aim to resolve their futures sooner rather than later.

Keith Wyness, who served as Everton’s CEO from 2004 to 2009, believes that the Reds will try to finalize agreements for the trio within the next three months.

"You’ve got to look at age and how these players develop. Liverpool are probably thinking about going far in the major competitions this season, and how that money could balance out against future transfer fees for these three players. There will be ongoing discussions and if anything is coming in terms of contracts, it’ll be done before January.” Wyness said (via Teamtalk)

Indeed, losing even one of these players, let alone all three, would be a significant blow to the club given their contributions to the Merseysiders. Consequently, the Reds faithful will hope that the club can secure the futures of all three players for the next season.
