Explained: Why Argentina vs Colombia Copa America 2024 final was delayed by nearly 2 hours

The Copa America 2024 final between Argentina and Colombia was delayed by nearly two hours. Reports have now revealed the reason behind the delays, with official statements being released.

Hours before the match kicked off, fans were clamoring to enter Hard Rock Stadium - the venue for the final clash. However, as security seemed to struggle with maintaining order, chaos ensued.

The stadium gates were shut and opened slightly, but this did not improve things, as fans were seen breaking through the railings (via NBC News). The heat in Miami saw many seeking water, with reports that a number of fans had fainted. According to the New York Times (via The Athletic), some fans had to pay for water, while others got it from the medical and fire departments.

A fan slammed the situation after managing to get in, questioning the USA's ability to manage the World Cup which will take place in 2026. They said (via NBC News):

“They can’t organize a World Cup! It’s impossible. People stuck against the gate for hours, unable to breathe. There was a senior citizen, look at him, look at him, left without water. No water, nothing.”

The match, which was set to start at 8 pm (ET) was delayed to 8:30 pm. It was delayed again to 8:45 pm and eventually started at 9:22 pm.

It took some time, but the gates were eventually opened for the Copa America 2024 final and fans were let in. However, it is uncertain how many fans were actually ticketed and how many managed to enter without tickets.

An official statement from Hard Rock Stadium said:

“All fans without tickets MUST leave Hard Rock Stadium premises. It is paramount to a successful and most importantly a safe match.”

Miami-Dade County's police department also issued an official statement, explaining:

“These incidents have been a result of the unruly behavior of fans trying to access the stadium. We are asking everyone to be patient, and abide by the rules set by our officers and Hard Rock Stadium personnel."
"We are actively working with Hard Rock Stadium to ensure a safe environment for all those attending. Unruly behavior will get you ejected and/or arrested.”

There was no official statement from CONMEBOL, who are the official planners of Copa America 2024.
