Amid reports of leaving Barcelona, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has announced his retirement from international football. The former Manchester City midfielder has been playing for Germany since 2011, having played for their U18 and U21 teams from 2008 to 2010.

Despite not being part of the Germany squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Argentina, Ilkay Gundogan has been an integral part of Die Mannschaft, having last played at Euro 2024. The midfielder took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his retirement (as translated from German):

"Dear football Germany, after a few weeks of consideration, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to end my national team career. I look back with great pride on 82 international matches for my home country – a number I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011."

Reminiscing his highlights in international football, he continued:

"My highlight was definitely the huge honour of being able to lead the team as captain at our home European Championships last summer! After all these years, we finally managed to make the nation proud again - I'm very happy that I was able to play a part in that.
"But even before the tournament, I felt a certain tiredness in my body and also in my head, which got me thinking. And the games at club and national level are not getting any less."

He concluded:

"I will definitely continue to be a fan of this national team, and I really hope that we can continue the upward trend together - and then there is nothing to stop us from being one of the closest contenders for the title at the 2026 World Cup.
"We have a fantastic coach, a really strong team and a great team spirit. Thanks to all the fans, staff, coaches and teammates who have accompanied me on this journey.

Ilkay Gundogan made his debut for Germany at the age of 20 under Joachim Low. In 82 outings with Die Mannschaft, he scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists.

Ilkay Gundogan open to leaving Barcelona and could return to Manchester City

Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly considering the possibility of leaving Barcelona and making a return to Manchester City. The German left the Etihad to join the Blaugrana on a Bosman transfer in the summer of 2023.

As per The Sun, Gundogan has handed in a transfer request after being left out of Barcelona’s matchday squad for their La Liga opener against Valencia. Adding to the intrigue, the 33-year-old has reportedly been told that Barca won't stand in his way if he seeks an exit.

New boss Hansi Flick wants Gundogan to stay, but the financial limitations of the club could complicate matters. The manager said:

“I know him very well. I appreciate the player and the person he is. We spoke about everything but it will stay between us. I have a feel he will stay.”

Ilkay Gundogan’s time at Barcelona hasn’t been too impressive, scoring five times and providing 14 assists in 51 outings across completions.
