Real Madrid target Alphonso Davies has, unsurprisingly, picked Lionel Messi over himself while choosing the GOAT of football. The Bayern Munich defender was tasked with picking the better player from two until he was left with one man standing.

Towards the end of the segment, the Canada international was paired against the Barcelona legend, who repeatedly came up against Real Madrid earlier in his career. Hilariously claiming that he would edge Messi in terms of pace, Davies picked the latter for his all-round abilities and told TSN:

"Alphonso Davies or Messi? I mean, are we talking about who is faster? Then it's me. But if we're talking about who is the better player all round, I'll be true to myself and pick Messi."

The Argenitna captain is among the greatest to have stepped on a football pitch. He recently won his second Copa America title with his country after lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

During his time at Barcelona, Messi played 778 matches across competitions, bagging 672 goals and 303 assists. He won the La Liga title on 10 occasions while lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy four times with the Blaugrana.

The 37-year-old is also an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and is three ahead of arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile, Davies must decide on the next step in his career.

The left-back has a year left on his contract at Bayern Munich and is strongly linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu (via Bayern Strikes).

In his last match for Argentina, ex-Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria clinched the Copa America 2024 trophy alongside Lionel Messi. However, neither player completed the game, which was decided in extra time against Colombia.

Messi had to be withdrawn in the second half after suffering an ankle injury, while Di Maria was substituted late into the second half of extra time. The match's only goal came from substitute Lautaro Martinez in the 112th minute.

This brings to an end an era where Messi and Di Maria shared the pitch on 113 occasions for Argentina, bagging 13 joint goal contributions in the process. Overall, the former Manchester United man made 145 appearances across competitions for his nation, bagging 31 goals and 32 assists.
