Morocco and Iraq battle it out at the Stade de Nice in Nice on Tuesday (July 39) in their last group fixture of the 2024 Paris Olympics. With all four sides in Group B locked on three points, the race to qualify for the quarter-finals is wide open.
Morocco began their campaign with a stunning 2-1 win over Argentina but lost to Ukraine by the same scoreline in their next outing. Soufiane Rahimi had pulled the Atlas Lions level from the spot after the hour mark, cancelling out Dmytro Kryskiv's first-half opener. However, a 98th-minute winner from Ihor Krasnopir sunk Morocco.
In four previous appearances, Morocco have never progressed beyond the first round. If they fail to win, it would mean another early exit.
Meanwhile, Iraq also began their campaign with a win, beating Ukraine 2-1 after falling behind. It was a statement performance from the Lions of Babylon, but their bubble was soon burst, as they lost 3-1 to Argentina on matchday two.
In their two previous appearances at the Olympics, Iraq have progressed beyond the first round once, in 2004, when the Middle Eastern side achieved a fourth place-finish.
Their stint in the 2016 edition ended in the group stage. Radhi Shenaishil's side will hope for better fortunes in their first appearance at the Olympics since then.
