Spain v Germany: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024
Spain v Germany: Quarter-Final - UEFA EURO 2024

Spain scored in the 119th minute to take a 2-1 lead and send Germany crashing out of Euro 2024 in the quarterfinals on Friday, July 5. Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino scored an excellent header for La Roja.

Coming off a 4-1 win over Georgia in the Round of 16, manager Luis de la Fuente decided to stick with the same team against Germany. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, brought back Jonathan Tah from suspension, replacing Nico Schlotterbeck while Emre Can came in for Robert Andrich.

After a cautious start to the game, the two sides began to pick up some attacking momentum in the first half. Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal forced saves from Manuel Neuer for Spain, while Kai Havertz missed a couple of chances for Germany.

La Roja seized the advantage early in the second half as Olmo found the back of the net in the 51st minute. His late run into the box was not tracked by the defenders and he side-footed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

The hosts then pushed ahead in search of an equaliser. Havertz missed a glorious opportunity when Unai Simon's poor goal kick caught him out of position. However, the Arsenal man's effort cleared the bar with the goal gaping wide.

Germany did manage to find the equaliser in the 89th minute. Substitute Florian Wirtz struck a sweet effort after Joshua Kimmich won a header in the box to send the fans into raptures as the game went into extra time.

After a cagey first half of extra time, the second half once again saw Spain gain some momentum. Late on, they took the lead as Olmo's cross found Mikel Merino who headed home brilliantly to stun the fans in the 119th minute.

The result sees Germany out of the tournament in the last eight while Spain advance to face the winner of France vs Portugal. Here are Julian Nagelsmann's side's player ratings:

Germany Player Ratings

Manuel Neuer - 6.5/10

It was a decent outing from Neuer, making four saves in all but he could not do much about either goal.

Joshua Kimmich - 7/10

A strong performance from the Bayern Munich man who dealt well with the threat of Nico Williams. On the ball, he was smart with his link-up and put a few dangerous balls in while also getting the assist for their goal.

Antonio Rudiger - 5.5/10

The Real Madrid man had a decent showing all game until the final moment when he could not track Merino who ended up scoring the winner. He also received a yellow card.

Jonathan Tah - 5.5/10

He looked comfortable in possession and looked decent at the back.

David Raum - 5/10

It was not a particularly memorable game for Raum, who seemed to push off Lamine Yamal too much in the first half. He received a booking and was taken off for Mittelstadt who looked better.

Emre Can - 5/10

He struggled to get himself involved in the game and was removed at half-time.

Toni Kroos - 5/10

Kroos was lucky not to receive a yellow card early on in the game for a foul on Pedri that forced the Barcelona midfielder to leave the game. He seemed to lack his usual composure and was unable to influence proceedings in his usual manner, creating just two chances all game.

Leroy Sane - 5/10

Similar to Can, he could not really impact the game and was hooked at the break for Wirtz who was much more lively.

Ilkay Gundogan - 6/10

He started well early on but as the game went on he barely found himself in the game. He was subbed off in the 57th minute for Niclas Fullkrug.

Jamal Musiala - 6.5/10

One of Germany's more lively players in the game, Musiala looked to take on the Spain backline. He finished the game with three shots, three dribbles completed, and seven passes into the final third.

Kai Havertz - 4.5/10

Despite doing well in link-up play, the Arsenal man missed a glorious chance to level the game in the second half. He seemed to lack the finishing touch, a problem that has plagued him for a while now.

Substitutes:

Robert Andrich - 6/10

Coming in for Can for the second half, the Bayer Leverkusen man looked much more comfortable and almost grabbed a second for Germany.

Florian Wirtz - 7.5/10

Wirtz's omission from the starting lineup confused fans and he did well to show his quality coming off the bench. He displayed impressive technique to score the leveler and was threatening throughout. He finished with three shots, two chances created and two dribbles completed.

Maximillian Mittelstadt - 6.5/10

He was an improvement over Raum at left-back and provided quality with his crosses into the box, one of which led to Germany's goal.

Niclas Fullkrug - 5.5/10

He came on as a more conventional number nine, allowing Havertz to drop deeper but he seemed to lack the right finishing touches needed.

Thomas Muller - 5.5/10

Muller came on late in regulation time but struggled to have much of an impact.

Waldemar Anton - 6/10

Replacing Havertz, he was energetic in midfield but did little else.
