Egypt and Morocco battle it out for a bronze medal in the men's football tournament of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The sides will clash at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on Thursday.
Following an incredible run, Egypt were finally beaten by hosts France in the semi-finals, powered by a double from Jean-Philippe Mateta. The Pharaohs had taken the lead in the game through Mahmoud Saber in the 62nd minute.
With less than 10 minutes of normal time remaining, the North African side seemed to be on their way to a historic win, but Mateta equalized in the 83rd minute. With no further goals at either end, the match went into extra time and Mateta came back to haunt Egypt, restoring France's lead just nine minutes into the first added minutes.
Michael Olise then consolidated the win by scoring a third goal in the 108th minute. For the first time in five games, Egypt were on the losing end, thereby seeing their dreams of a gold medal quashed. However, all is not lost yet, as Rogério Micale's side can still win the bronze medal, but standing in their way are their North African rivals, Morocco.
The Atlas Lions were beaten 2-1 by Spain after having taken the lead in the opening stanza through Soufiane Rahimi. The Al Ain forward scored a penalty in the 33rd minute as Morocco were on course to knock out Spain just as their senior team did at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
However, the tides turned after the break, with young Barcelona star Fermin Lopez equalized for La Roja before Juan Sanchez netted the winner in the 86th minute. Morocco's dream run was finally ended but they will be aiming to clinch the bronze medal against Egypt.
