Brazil host Ecuador in the World Cup qualifiers

Brazil will welcome Ecuador to Estadio Couto Pereira in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Friday. The two teams are separated by just one place and a point in the group-stage standings, with fifth-placed La Tri leading the Seleção.

The hosts have just one win in their last five games in all competitions. They had a poor outing in the 2024 Copa America and were eliminated from the quarterfinals by Uruguay.

La Tri were also eliminated from the quarterfinals as they lost on penalties to eventual champions Argentina. They hosted Chile in their last World Cup qualifying match in November and Ángel Mena's first-half strike helped them to a 1-0 win.

Brazil vs Ecuador Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • The two teams have crossed paths 35 times in all competitions. As expected, Seleção have been the dominant side in these meetings with 27 wins. The visitors have two wins to their name and six games have ended in draws.
  • The five-time World Cup winners are unbeaten in their last 12 meetings against La Tri, though the last two meetings between the two sides have ended in 1-1 draws.
  • The hosts are winless in their last four games in the World Cup qualifiers, suffering three consecutive defeats.
  • Ecuador, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last five games in the qualifiers, keeping three consecutive clean sheets.
  • Brazil have kept clean sheets in five of their last seven meetings against La Tri.
  • Seleção are winless in their last four games in the World Cup qualifiers, failing to score in two games in that period.
  • The hosts have the second-worst defensive record in the qualifiers thus far, conceding seven times in six games.

Brazil vs Ecuador Prediction

Seleção have won just one of their last five games in all competitions, with three games ending in draws. They have suffered three consecutive losses in the World Cup qualifiers, conceding five goals while scoring just once, and will look to improve upon that record.

Dorival Júnior will be without the services of Raphinha, who is suspended while Flamengo striker Pedro suffered an ACL injury and has left the training camp. Lucas Moura has been named in the senior squad after a six-year absence.

La Tri suffered a loss to Argentina in their World Cup qualifying campaign opener but have enjoyed a five-game unbeaten streak in the competition since. Interestingly, their two wins against the home side have both come in World Cup qualifiers.

Sebastián Beccacece has a couple of concerns for this match as Ángelo Preciado is suspended, so there is no natural right-back in the team for this match. Alan Minda left the training due to an injury and is not available here.

Both teams play for the first time since their exit from the Copa America and might be a bit rusty. With that in mind, a draw is likely to ensue.

Prediction: Brazil 1-1 Ecuador
