Former seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher's wife Corinna assured the legions of his fans that the German driver was still 'here, but different' during her appearance on the Netflix documentary Schumacher, which aired in September 2021. The former Ferrari driver retired from the sport at the end of the 2012 season after his unsuccessful three-year stint with Mercedes only resulted in him getting a podium at the European GP in his final year.

The 55-year-old failed to recapture his glory days and take the automotive giant to the top of the spot as he had envisioned when he first joined them after a three-year hiatus from the sport in early 2010. In December 2013, Schumacher suffered a brain injury during a skiing accident and was placed in a medically induced coma for years.

Information regarding his recovery was kept under wraps by Michael Schumacher's family. However, Corinna provided a rare insight into their new reality when she spoke about the F1 icon's condition in the Netflix documentary Schumacher, which was released in September 2021 and follows the life of the famed racer. She said (as quoted by ESPN):

"Michael is here. Different, but he's here, and that gives us strength, I find. We're together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable. And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will," she said.
"We're trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. 'Private is private', as he always said. It's very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible. Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael," Corinna added.

It was reported that Michael Schumacher made his first appearance in public after 11 years at his daughter, Gina-Marie's wedding ceremony at their home in Spain on September 29 this year.

Michael Schumacher reportedly makes his first public appearance

Former Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher's first public appearance in 11 years was reportedly kept under wraps from the guests arriving at Gina-Marie's wedding in late September this year.

Invitees were reportedly instructed to leave their phones at the gate so that they could not take pictures of the seven-time world champion at the wedding. Only the German driver's family and inner circle knew his public appearance.

While there has been no official confirmation from the family regarding his health, former FIA President Jean Todt provided an update regarding Schumacher's condition last year to Le Equipe', saying:

"He is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different, and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say."

Many of Michael Schumacher's records, such as winning most consecutive titles (5) and finishing on the podium throughout the year, have remained intact despite the sport expanding its calendar and adding more races.
