Lando Norris is under investigation by the FIA after his on-track skirmishes against Charles Leclerc in the final lap of the Sprint race. Norris was thought to be driving "erratically" while defending his place against Leclerc on Lap 19 at the Circuit of The Americas.
Norris' start to the 2024 United States GP weekend did not go as planned as the McLaren star qualified for the Sprint in P4, whereas his title rival Max Verstappen took the pole position. On top of that, his Sprint outing on Saturday brought him further trouble.
Despite starting the race from P4, the British driver quickly gained two places and was right behind Verstappen throughout the race. However, on the very last lap, he fumbled and lost his place to Carlos Sainz.
As he ran wide, he not only lost P2, but also became vulnerable against Leclerc, who was in P4. Watching the Monegasque in his mirror, Norris tried every trick to keep the Ferrari at bay. However, the FIA took cognizance of the moves, and as per Autosport, Norris is under investigation.
Verstappen claimed the Sprint race win, and Sainz finished in P2. Norris came home in P3, ahead of Leclerc in P4. Oscar Piastri ended his race in P10.
Max Verstappen extended his lead against Lando Norris
Following his Sprint race victory on Saturday, Max Verstappen extended his F1 drivers' championship lead over Lando Norris. Prior to the Sprint, the Dutchman had a 52-point cushion over the Briton, and now it is 54.
Verstappen claimed eight points thanks to his Sprint victory, whereas Norris managed six. As things stand, the Red Bull star has 339 points under his belt, compared to the McLaren ace's 285.
However, Norris still has a chance to salvage the situation and move to Mexico with momentum on side. He needs to carry out a brilliant qualifying performance later on Saturday, and win the race to reduce the gap to Verstappen.
