Aston Martin team principal, Mike Krack, recently praised Fernando Alonso's P8 finish at the Singapore GP but pointed out that the team should not get carried away after a good result. Aston Martin has struggled to keep up with top teams on the grid and is currently fifth in the constructors' championship with 86 points.

If they keep this position, they will be placed fifth for the second time in a row. Though they secured P5 in 2023, they had a much better season since they were among the top teams like Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes in the first few races.

In 2024, however, they struggled to break out of the midfield and close the gap to the top. The British team was not expecting a good race weekend at Singapore, but Fernando Alonso pulled a stunning drive around Marina Bay and secured P8 with the team. While the team was expecting to finish somewhere in P15 or P16, one of their drivers managed to score four points.

As quoted by Autoweek on September 24, Aston Martin's team boss said that even though they finished much higher than they initially predicted, they should get lax and strive for improvement to get to where they want to be.

"We should not go into full destruction mode as a team, yeah, but we have to make sure that the positive results we are accumulating are not hiding from the facts we have to improve, or that we are not where we wanted to be, and that is critical as a whole team," Krack said.

Fernando Alonso rejoices Singapore GP points finish but aims higher with Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso was delighted after finishing P8 at the 2024 F1 Singapore GP. However, the Spaniard points out that Aston Martin wants to aim higher and be among the top teams.

Speaking to F1.com, he said that P8 was essentially a dream finish for the team in Singapore, which looked possible when he secured P7 in Saturday's qualifying.

"Eighth is better than we expected coming here to Singapore. Obviously the qualifying yesterday was very encouraging and starting P7, we were dreaming that P8/P9 was possible and at the end we achieved it," Alonso said.

He was hopeful that his team would find more performance during the four-week-long break between Singapore and Austin and get out of the midfield soon.

"Now we have a little break before Austin and we have to find some performance in the car. We’ve been losing a little bit of ground compared to the top teams and we are in the middle of the midfield. We want to change this situation," he added.

Fernando Alonso currently stands in ninth place in the drivers' championship with 62 points. The Spaniard's teammate, Lance Stroll, is 11th with 24 points.
