The F1 penalty points system is a robust system that has been put in place to not let driving standards fall below a threshold. As a part of this, drivers are given penalty points on the basis of transgressions that they commit on track. These penalty points stay on the driver's quota for 12 months.

If a driver ends up accumulating more than 12 F1 penalty points, he faces a one-race ban. It's almost been a decade since this system was implemented and no driver has been banned yet, but there are a few that have come close.
