Unlike soccer and many other sports, a full race ban is a rare occasion in F1. Over the years in the sport's history, drivers have faced bans on rare occasions, and the latest name on the list is Kevin Magnussen.

A race ban does not occur overnight. If a driver accumulates 12 penalty points on his FIA Superlicence in 12 months, the driver will miss the next race. However, the points will reset to zero following the ban. Below are some of the drivers who received race bans in F1.

#5 Nigel Mansell - 1989 Spanish Grand Prix

Nigel Mansell received a one-race ban in Portugal after he reversed his car in the pit lane. The British driver, instead of stopping for the pit stop, locked up and drove around the pit crew.

Mansell was shown a black flag for his action, but he revealed that he did not notice the flag or Ferrari's pit board. In the end, the FIA handed him a race ban, but Ferrari did not field anyone to replace him at the Spanish Grand Prix.

#4 Michael Schumacher - 1994 Italian and Portuguese Grand Prix

Michael Schumacher was one of the rare drivers to have received a two-race ban, as the German former star received the penalty for overtaking Damon Hill in the 1994 British GP formation lap. Surprisingly, he repeated the violation following an aborted start.

Furthermore, Schumacher did not serve the five-second time penalty he incurred due to the violation in the pit lane and ignored the black flag shown to him as a result. In the end, the Stewards handed the seven-time world champion a two-race ban for the subsequent races in Italy and Portugal.

#3 Mika Hakkinen - 1994 Hungarian Grand Prix

Mika Hakkinen caused a collision at the end of the 1994 British Grand Prix and was given a one-race ban along with three race suspensions. However, his penalty was activated after he triggered a multi-car collision at the first corner of the 1994 German Grand Prix.

Hakkinen accepted the FIA verdict, and McLaren did not appeal against it. In the end, he missed the 1994 Hungarian Grand Prix.

#2 Romain Grosjean - 2012 Italian Grand Prix

Romain Grosjean caused a massive collision at the start of the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.

As a result of the collision, the FIA handed him a race ban and a $55,000 fine (€50,000). Jerome d'Ambrosio replaced him for the next race in Italy.

#1 Kevin Magnussen - 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Kevin Magnussen is the first F1 driver to receive a race ban under the current penalty system, introduced in 2014. The Haas driver collided with Pierre Gasly at the Italian Grand Prix and incurred two penalty points.

Magnussen will have to serve the ban at the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and Haas decided to replace him with Oliver Bearman, their upcoming driver for the 2025 F1 season.

Besides the above-mentioned drivers, Felipe Massa, Eddie Irvine, Jacques Villeneuve, and Riccardo Patrese also received race bans in their respective F1 careers.
