The Indian Test team suffered a horrific start to the first fixture of the bilateral Test series against New Zealand on Thursday (October 17) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After the first day was washed out due to rain, play resumed on Day 2 amid overcast conditions.
After choosing to bat first, the hosts were put under incessant pressure by the Black Caps' bowlers. They took advantage of the conditions and bowled in perfect areas to trouble the Indian batters.
As a result, India were bundled out for a meager total of 46. Matt Henry emerged as the wrecker-in-chief with a five-wicket haul while lanky pacer William O'Rourke returned with four scalps. At the time of writing, New Zealand have started on a good note, accumulating 30 for the loss of no wickets.
On that note, let's take a look at the five records that India broke during their abysmal first-innings total against New Zealand.
#1 Lowest innings total in a home Test
With their disappointing performance against New Zealand, India recorded their lowest-ever Test total at home. Their previous lowest test score was 75 against West Indies, which came at Delhi in 1987.
This marks India's third-lowest total in the longest format. In December 2020, they were bundled out for 36 against Australia. They were all-out for 42 against England in June 1974.
#2 Most ducks among India's top seven in a home Test
The fixture also saw India register the most ducks among the top seven batters in a home Test. Notably, Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja could not open their account in the fixture, resulting in the Indian team creating an unwanted record.
Previously, four Indian players among the top seven have been out for a duck on two occasions. However, both Tests were played on foreign soil. Furthermore, the ongoing Test saw the top seven scoring the fewest runs (35) as well.
#3 Third-fewest runs by India top four in a home Test
India's top four, comprising Yashasvi Jaiswal (13), Rohit Sharma (2), Virat Kohli (0) and Sarfaraz Khan (0), could only accumulate 15 runs. It was the third-fewest runs registered by the Indian team at home.
In December 1979, the Indian top-four could contribute only 10 runs against Pakistan while scoring only 14 runs in November 2010 against New Zealand.
#4 Second-lowest score at the loss of 6th wicket in a home Test
India's 34 is now the second-lowest score for the side after the loss of the sixth wicket in a home Test. It is the sixth-lowest total for them at this juncture in the red-ball format as well.
India's previous lowest at the loss of the sixth wicket in a home Test was 27 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1969.
#5 Lowest Test total in Asia
The Rohit Sharma-led side registered the lowest-ever Test total in the Asian subcontinent. They broke West Indies' record of 53 against Pakistan at Faisalabad in 1986.
Meanwhile, Pakistan were all-out for 53 in the second innings against Australia at Faislabad in 2002. The same fixture saw them getting bundled out for 59 in the first innings, as Australia won by an innings and 198 runs.
