SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Qualifier 1 fixture of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 21. The winner of this contest will secure a place in the final, while the loser will play Qualifier 2.

SRH’s journey at the IPL started in the year 2013, and they made it to the playoffs in their maiden appearance at the tournament. In the 11 editions that SRH have appeared in, they have played 11 playoff matches, and emerged victorious in five of them, including a title-winning run.

As they prepare to clinch their second IPL title, let us look at how SRH have fared over the years.

IPL 2013: Eliminator, RR vs SRH (RR won by 4 wickets)

In what was their first-ever IPL outing in 2013, SRH qualified for the top four and played the Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals. They couldn’t move further in the tournament and were knocked out after a defeat against the Jaipur-based franchise.

IPL 2016: Eliminator, KKR vs SRH (SRH won by 22 runs)

SRH couldn’t find a place in the top four the next two seasons but made a magnificent comeback in 2016. SRH first faced KKR in the Eliminator and made their way into Qualifier 2 with a 22-run victory.

IPL 2016: Qualifier 2, GL vs SRH (SRH won by 4 wickets)

They next faced Gujarat Lions (GL) and clinched a four-wicket win to book a date with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) (now Bengaluru) in the summit clash.

IPL 2016: Final, RCB vs SRH (SRH won by 8 runs)

In front of a massive audience, that majorly included RCB supporters at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, SRH clinched a thrilling eight-run victory and lifted the title under David Warner’s leadership.

IPL 2017: Eliminator, SRH vs KKR (KKR won by 7 wickets, DLS method)

As defending champions, they made it to the playoffs again in 2017, but couldn’t go past KKR this time. In a rain-curtailed match, the Kolkata-based outfit clinched a seven-wicket win (DLS method) and knocked SRH out of the race.

IPL 2018: Qualifier 1, SRH vs CSK (CSK won by 2 wickets)

SRH again played three out of the four games in the playoffs in IPL 2018. They suffered a close two-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Qualifier 1, but had another chance to make it to the final by playing the Qualifier 2.

IPL 2018: Qualifier 2, SRH vs KKR (SRH won by 14 runs)

As they met KKR again, this time in the Qualifier 2 fixture. With a 14-run win, SRH secured their final berth to face CSK again. Having gotten a second chance, they made the most of the opportunity and came out victorious.

IPL 2018: Final, CSK vs SRH (CSK won by 8 wickets)

Making it to their second IPL final, SRH faced a disappointing outcome as CSK emerged victorious again. SRH suffered back-to-back defeats against the Men in Yellow, who scripted a memorable comeback and lifted the IPL trophy for the third time that year.

IPL 2019: Eliminator, DC vs SRH (DC won by 2 wickets)

In 2019, SRH were handed a close two-wicket defeat by Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Eliminator. In what was a do-or-die match, they suffered a two-wicket loss and were knocked out of the race to the finale.

IPL 2020: Eliminator, SRH vs RCB (SRH won by 6 wickets)

SRH had another memorable campaign the next season, in 2020, and made it to the top four again. This time, they defeated RCB by six wickets in the Eliminator and booked their spot in the Qualifier 2 to face off against DC.

IPL 2020: Qualifier 2, DC vs SRH (DC won by 17 runs)

For the second time in a row, DC managed to crash SRH’s hopes of making it to the final. After knocking them out of the race in 2019, DC handed the Hyderabad-based outfit a defeat in Qualifier 2 of the 2020 edition as SRH’s wait to clinch their second IPL trophy continued.

SRH’s hunt for their second IPL title continues

After finishing eighth on the points table in 2021 (eight teams) and 2022 (10 teams), SRH had another miserable outing as they finished with the wooden spoon in 2023.

Putting all those outcomes behind, SRH revamped their squad quite a bit for the IPL 2024 and added some powerful players. Australia’s World Cup winners Travis Head and Pat Cummins’ addition to the team did wonders as the former put up scintillating knocks and the latter showcased brilliant captaincy as SRH broke multiple records this season.

They finished second on the points table at the end of the league stage, and are all set to face KKR in the high-intensity clash. While a victory would lead them straight to the final, a loss would give them a chance at redemption. In case of a defeat, they’ll face the winner of RR vs RCB in the Qualifier 2 contest.
