Zimbabwean wicketkeeper Clive Madande created an unwanted record by conceding 42 byes in an innings on Friday, July 26 at Stormont Cricket Ground in Belfast during the one-off Test match against Ireland.

During Ireland's first innings, the young keeper had a tough day behind the stumps. This is the first occasion in Test cricket history when a wicketkeeper conceded more than 40 runs in byes in a single inning.

Madane broke the record of England keeper Les Ames, who gave 37 byes against Australia in a Test match played at the Oval in 1934. Ireland scored 250 runs in their first inning, with 59 coming from the extras (42 byes, 5 lb, 9 wides, 3 no-balls).

The 24-year-old, who has represented Zimbabwe in 15 ODIs and 35 T20Is, is having a tough Test debut. He was dismissed for a first-ball duck, as Zimbabwe scored 250 in the first innings.

Ireland takes a 40-run lead in the first innings

Ireland won the toss and chose to bowl first in the one-off Test match. Zimbabwe openers Joylord Gumbie (49) and Prince Masvaure (74) stitched together a 97-run partnership. However, the Ireland bowlers kept chipping away after that, as Zimbabwe went from 97/1 to 210/10.

In response, Peter Moor, who previously represented Zimbabwe in international cricket, struck his first fifty against them, scoring 79 runs off 105 balls. Apart from him, no Irish batter was able to convert their start into big innings as Ireland got bowled out on 250.

The Zimbabwe bowlers didn’t help themselves, as they conceded 59 extras, which allowed Ireland to take a 40-run first-inning lead. Blessing Murazabani and Tanaka Chivanga took three wickets for the visitors, while Tendai Chatara and Sean Williams bagged two.

At stumps on Day 2, Zimbabwe were 12/0 after four overs in their second innings.
