Former South African captain AB de Villiers was the latest cricketing legend to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame on Wednesday, October 16. He was joined by former England captain Alastair Cook and a legend of the Indian women's team Neetu David in the elite room of fame.

De Villiers entertained fans all across the globe with his revolutionary and innovative batting, while maintaining incredible consistency across formats in his 14-year international career. The now 40-year-old finished with over 20,000 runs at an average of over 48, including a 50+ average in ODIs and Tests.

De Villiers also smashed 47 centuries despite predominantly batting in the middle-order and holds the record for the fastest ODI ton off just 31 deliveries in 2015.

Apart from his breathtaking batting, the Protea legend was also among the world's best fielders with the ability to make an impact at any position on the ground.

Among the most popular cricketers, De Villiers' induction into the Hall of Fame had fans on X paying tribute with the following reactions:

"Tremendous honor to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame" - AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers expressed his delight at being inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, joining other elite cricketing legends.

The champion batter is second only to Jacques Kallis for most runs by a South African in international cricket.

"It is a tremendous honour to be inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, joining a select group of cricketers to be recognised in this way. Cricket is often described as an individual sport within a team game… and it’s true that, whether you are a batter taking guard at the crease or a bowler pausing at the start of his run-up, you - and only you - are responsible for what happens," said De Villiers to the ICC.

He added:

"That said, everyone who plays cricket understands it is, in spirit, a team game. And I know I would have achieved nothing without the help and support of so many teammates, coaches and support staff from my early days at school in Pretoria, through so many memorable days at the Titans and with the South Africa team - and, indeed in franchise cricket - all around the world."

AB de Villiers retired from international cricket in 2018 after helping South Africa beat Australia in a home Test series 3-1.
