Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian after 10 Tests

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the highest run-scorer for India after his first 10 Test matches, amassing 1,094 runs. This record was previously held by Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 978 runs in his initial 10 games, while Vinod Kambli accumulated 937 runs in the same number of matches.

In the ongoing Test against Bangladesh, the 22-year-old contributed 56 runs in the first innings but was dismissed for just 10 in the second.

Jaiswal’s impressive tally includes three centuries, placing him fourth among the top five run-scorers in their first 10 Test matches, behind Don Bradman (1,446), Everton Weekes (1,125), and George Headley (1,102). Australia’s Mark Taylor rounds out the list in fifth place with 1,088 runs.

Jaiswal made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2023, scoring 171 runs off 387 balls, with 16 boundaries and one six, as India secured a victory by an innings and 141 runs. He has also represented India in 23 T20Is, accumulating 723 runs, which include five fifties and one century.

The hosts posted 376 runs in their first innings, highlighted by a stellar century from Ravichandran Ashwin (113) and a determined half-century from Ravindra Jadeja (86). For the visitors, Hasan Mahmud claimed five wickets.

In response, Jasprit Bumrah made an early impact for India by dismissing Shadman Islam in the first over. Akash Deep followed suit, taking out Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque with consecutive deliveries in the ninth over.

Although Shakib Al Hasan (32) and Litton Das (22) attempted to stabilize the innings, India’s bowlers consistently made breakthroughs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz ended unbeaten on 27, but the visitors were ultimately bowled out for 149. Bumrah led the attack with four wickets, while Jadeja, Siraj, and Akash Deep each contributed with two wickets.

At the time of writing, India were 78/3 after 21 overs, leading by 305 runs, with Shubman Gill (32) and Rishabh Pant (10) at the crease.
