Women's T20 World Cup 2024 Points Table: Updated standings after South Africa vs West Indies match

South Africa vs West Indies
South Africa have made a commanding start to the Women's 2024 T20 World Cup

South Africa women's team have started their 2024 T20 World Cup on a perfect note after claiming a comfortable 10-wicket win over the West Indies in the Group B contest at the Dubai International Stadium on Friday, October 4. Hosting the first game of the tournament, the venue witnessed a comprehensive display by the Proteas women, who now move to the second place in the points table in the early stages.

South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt had won the toss and opted to bowl first. Marizanne Kapp made the new ball talk in her trademark fashion, and accounted for the crucial wicket of Hayley Matthews with a brilliant outswinger. Deandra Dottin could not make an impact on her return after retirement and ended up being Kapp's second victim.

Stefanie Taylor held one end and remained unbeaten till the end on 44 runs off 41 deliveries, but could not get any support. The Women in Maroon could only finish with 118/6 as left-arm spinner Mlaba recorded a four-fer.

In reply, South Africa made a strong start to the run chase. They set the tempo early on and put on more than a third of their target inside the powerplay itself without any casualties. The duo of Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits kept the scoreboard ticking and even brought up their 100-run partnership, eventually, finishing the game themselves.

The result hands South Africa their first set of points with a net run rate of 0.773 after wrapping up the run chase with 2.1 overs remaining. Bangladesh are also placed on two points with a slightly superior NRR of 0.800, while Scotland and West Indies take up the bottom places with no wins registered yet.

South Africa to face England next on October 7

After a thumping win to kickstart their campaign, they will be up against England in a rematch of the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup semi-final. On that occasion, South Africa had come away with a narrow win on home soil. In fact, the Proteas women had also defeated England in the 2020 edition in Australia to record their first win against them in the competition.

The crucial contest is scheduled for Monday, October 7 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
