Women's T20 World Cup 2024 Points Table: Updated standings after England vs Bangladesh match

England vs Bangladesh
England have made a strong start to the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup campaign

The Heather Knight-led England team began their 2024 Women's T20 World Cup campaign with a win over Bangladesh at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday, October 5. The inaugural winners of the competition secured a win by 21 runs to amass their first set of points in Group B.

After opting to bat first, the England openers Danni Wyatt and Maia Bouchier started off cautiously before upping the ante. The latter departed after trying to switch gears post the powerplay. England had built a relatively solid platform at 73-2, but faced a collapse to 90-5 in no time.

They eventually reached 118-7 in their 20 overs, with only three batters recording double figures. England's condition would have been much worse had Bangladesh been sharper on the field.

In reply, Bangladesh were not allowed to prosper courtesy of England's four-pronged spin attack. The quartet of Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Sarah Glenn, and Linsey Smith worked their craft to keep the opposition under check.

Bangladesh could only muster 20 runs in the powerplay, losing two wickets, and the required rate became too steep to counter. Bangladesh eventually ended with 97-7 while Danni Wyatt was adjudged player of the match for her crucial 41 with the bat.

Following the result, England are placed atop the Group B points table with two points and a net run-rate of +1.050. Bangladesh's net run-rate fell to -0.125 following the defeat, while they are ranked third on the table with two points.

England to face South Africa on October 7

England will be up against an in-form South Africa side next up on Monday, October 7 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The Laura Wolvaardt-led side are coming on the back of a dominant 10-wicket win over West Indies, and look like a force to be reckoned with.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will face the West Indies at the same venue on Wednesday, October 10, in a bid to remain alive in the competition.
