The Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024 kicked off on July 19 with two Group A fixtures at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. While Nepal Women stunned their UAE counterparts in the opening match of the tournament, Team India blanked arch-rivals Pakistan in the second match of the doubleheader.

Batting first, UAE’s line-up was restricted to 115/8 from 20 overs courtesy of a sublime three-wicket haul from Indu Barma. Khushi Sharma top-scored in the innings with 36 and Kavisha Egodage’s 22 turned out to be the next biggest benefactor of UAE’s mere 115-run total.

Chasing 116 for a win, it took Nepal Women just 16.1 overs to mow down their target. Opener Samjhana Khadka belted a match-winning 72* from 45 balls to successfully negotiate Kavisha Egodage’s threatening three-fer.

In the second match of the day, Indian bowlers Deepti Sharma (3/20), Renuka Singh (2/14), Shreyanka Patil (2/14) and Pooja Vastrakar (2/31) collectively enveloped Pakistan Women for just 108 in less than 20 overs.

In response, opening batters Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana struck identical 40s at the top in their 85-run stand to orchestrate a seven-wicket Indian win with nearly six overs to spare.
