Only 35 overs were possible on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park in Kanpur on Friday, September 27 due to rain and poor weather conditions overall. In a stop-start day, hosts India won the toss and decided to bowl first. They picked up three wickets in the 35 overs that were bowled, while Bangladesh managed to eke out 107 runs.

Ahead of the Test, there were some reports doing the rounds that Rohit Sharma and co. might go into the game with an extra spinner in home boy Kuldeep Yadav instead of one of the pacers. India, however, went in with the same playing XI that featured in Chennai, keeping the conditions in Kanpur in mind.

Pacer Akash Deep, who might have had to make way if India had decided to go in with an extra spinner, grabbed the opportunity by dismissing both the Bangladesh openers. The right-arm pacer from Bengal struck in his very first over, the ninth over of the innings, ending Zakir Hasan's stay at the crease for a 24-ball duck.

The Bangladesh opener never looked comfortable at the crease, and eventually perished to Akash Deep, nicking a length ball outside off while playing with hard hands. Yashasvi Jaiswal at slip took another good catch, going low to his right.

A smart review then ended the other Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam's stay at the crease for 24 off 36 balls. Shadman tried to flick a length ball from Akash Deep that came in with the angle, but missed the delivery. The on-field umpire did not raise his finger and Rohit went for the DRS after a rather lengthy discussion. The decision proved to be the right one, as the replay came up with three reds.

Ashwin ends stubborn 3rd-wicket stand for Bangladesh

Having lost their first two wickets with only 29 runs on the board, Bangladesh made a strong comeback courtesy of a defiant third-wicket stand between Mominul Haque (40*) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (31). The duo added 51 for the third wicket to lift the visitors.

Seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, however, broke the stand, trapping Bangladesh captain Shanto leg before. The left-handed batter played down the wrong line to an in-drifter from round the wicket and was struck right in front of the stumps. He went for a review, but the original decision stayed as India celebrated their third wicket on a rain-curtailed day in Kanpur.
