India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been in excellent form for Northamptonshire, as he castled Derbyshire opener Luis Reece with a stunning delivery in their 2024 County Championship match on Wednesday, September 11. The game is being played at County Ground in Northampton.

The dismissal came on the fifth ball of the 13th over. Chahal delivered a brilliant tossed-up ball on off-stump. Reece played for the turn, but the ball went straight and hit the top of the off-stump.

The left-hander scored 15 off 34 balls, including one boundary. Reece’s dismissal left Derbyshire struggling at 31/3 after 12.5 overs.

Chasing a target of 266, Derbyshire were struggling at 93/6 after 33 overs, with Wayne Madsen (28) and Zak Chappell (0) at the crease. They still need 173 runs to win with only four wickets remaining.

Yuzvendra Chahal has been spearheading Northamptonshire’s attack, having already taken four wickets, while Justin Broad and Rob Keogh have each claimed one.


Yuzvendra Chahal took a five-wicket haul in the first innings

The 34-year-old has already made a significant impact, claiming a five-wicket haul in the first innings for Northamptonshire.

Batting first, Northamptonshire posted 219 runs, thanks to a solid 90-run innings from Saif Zaib. In reply, Derbyshire was dismissed for 165 in 61.3 overs, with Chahal spearheading the attack for Northamptonshire. The leg-spinner finished with five wickets for 45 runs in 16.3 overs. This was Chahal's third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, giving Northamptonshire a 54-run first-innings lead.

Prithvi Shaw had a disappointing performance for Northamptonshire, scoring just two runs in the second innings after a modest four runs in the first essay. Gus Miller (42) and James Sales (40) made valuable contributions.

Rob Keogh was the standout for Northamptonshire in the second innings, scoring 63 off 99 balls with eight boundaries, helping the team post 211 runs and set a target of 266. Martin Andersson and Jack Morley each took three wickets for Derbyshire.
