Worcestershire Rapids all-rounder Matthew Waite smashed 34 runs off Birmingham Bears left-arm pacer George Garton's over during the Vitality T20 Blast 2024. The two sides met at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Friday, July 12. Waite, 28, scored five sixes and a boundary during the final over of the Rapids' innings in a rain-curtailed 17 overs per-side game.

Worcestershire Rapids skipper Adam Hose won the toss and elected to bat first. While Kashif Ali top scored for the Rapids with a 30-ball 46-run knock, useful contributions from Josh Cobb, Ethan Brookes, and Nathan Smith, combined with Matthew Waite's astonishing cameo towards the end, powered them to a total of 187-6 in their 20 overs.

The Birmingham Bears were bundled out for 132 in 15.2 overs and lost by 55 runs.

Birmingham Bears are at the top despite the defeat against Worcestershire Rapids

Chasing 188 runs for a victory, Birmingham Bears were off to the worst possible start, as both their openers were dismissed without troubling the scorers. The hosts' batters couldn't get going as wickets fell at regular intervals. Birmingham Bears were eventually bowled out for 132 runs in 15.2 overs, losing the contest by 55 runs. Having unleashed his all-round prowess, Matthew Waite was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with the figures of 4-29 in 3.2 overs.

Despite the defeat, the Bears are currently on top of the Vitality T20 Blast 2024 North Group standings with 16 points from 11 matches, one point ahead of the second-placed Lancashire (15 points in 12 matches).

With eight points from 12 matches, the Worcestershire Rapids are in the eighth spot among nine teams. They will be hosting Yorkshire in their upcoming clash. Meanwhile, the Birmingham Bears will be up against Derbyshire in their next match. Both the games are set to be played on Sunday, July 14.
