[Watch] When the umpire called Sachin Tendulkar back after declaring him out in an India vs Australia ODI in 2006, leaving Ricky Ponting livid

Sachin Tendulkar was involved in some bizarre incidents in India vs Australia matches during his storied international career. He was declared lbw controversially during the 1999 Adelaide Test as he ducked to a delivery from Glenn McGrath and the ball ended up hitting him below the armpit.

Tendulkar and McGrath were in the thick of the action again as another strange incident played out in match number six of the DLF Cup in Kuala Lumpur in September 2006. India were chasing a target of 214 and Tendulkar was declared caught behind off McGrath for four on the second ball of the second over.

The Indian opener tried to pull a short ball from the tall Aussie pacer. However, he could not get his stroke right and the ball was collected by keeper Brad Haddin. The Australians appealed for a catch and umpire Mark Benson raised his finger, much to the shock of Tendulkar. That was not the end of the story though.

When the replay was played, it became absolutely clear that the Indian opener had missed the delivery from McGrath and that the ball hit his shoulder before landing in the Australian wicketkeeper's gloves.

Realizing his mistake, umpire Benson called Tendulkar back [DRS was not in use back then] and the fielding side was completely stunned. Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was livid at what had just transpired.

What happened after Sachin Tendulkar was recalled?

Although Tendulkar was called back by umpire Benson, he could not utilize the reprieve, if one may call it so. The Indian batting superstar was dismissed for four off 10 balls by Brett Lee in the third over of the chase. The right-hander attempted to drive a short-of-a-length delivery outside off stump, but could not control the stroke and sliced the ball to point, where Michael Hussey took the catch.

Following the Master Blaster's dismissal, the Men in Blue crumbled to 195 all out in 43.5 overs. Lee ran through the Indian batting line-up with figures of 5-38 from 8.5 overs. Apart from Tendulkar, the speedster also dismissed Virender Sehwag (10), MS Dhoni (23), RP Singh (4), and Munaf Patel (1).

Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, Australia put up 213 on the board as opener Matthew Hayden top-scored with 54 off 66, while Haddin contributed 46 off 63, and Brad Hogg 38 off 49. For India, Ajit Agarkar and RP Singh claimed two wickets each, while Harbhajan Singh was economical with figures of 1-24.
