West Indies were at their destructive best in their final group stage clash of the 2024 T20 World Cup against Afghanistan. The Men in Maroon scored 218/5 in the first innings, of which 36 runs came in the fourth over of the innings bowled by Azmatullah Omarzai in St. Lucia on Tuesday, 18 June.
The Men in Maroon were off to a flying start despite losing Brandon King early in the innings. Omarzai, who had claimed the early breakthrough, was given his second over when the hosts were 37-1 midway through the powerplay. The all-rounder was up against Nicholas Pooran.
The left-handed batter straightaway took the bowler on with a couple of boundaries. Omarzai made life difficult for himself by dealing with extras, which included five wides and a no-ball. The latter half of the over also witnessed a flurry of boundaries, with Pooran hitting two fours and two sixes to wrap up the 36-run over for the West Indies. Have a look at the over right here:
Pooran ended up scoring 98 runs off 53 deliveries, with six fours and eight sixes. The explosive batter missed out on a ton after he was run out in the final over.
Azmatullah Omarzai finishes with figures of 1-41 against the West Indies
Omarzai's second over, where he went for aplenty, turned out to be the last one he bowled in the innings. After conceding nine runs in the first over with a wicket, his expensive second over took his figures to 1-41, as he bowled just half of his full quota.
Other bowlers, including the in-form Fazalhaq Farooqi and Rashid Khan, did not fare too well either, finishing with economies of 12.70 and 11.20, respectively.
Omarzai is currently at the crease (as of this writing) following a top-order collapse in the run chase. Afghanistan are placed at 82-5 after 11 overs and have an uphill task to chase down the mammoth score. Although both the West Indies and Afghanistan have qualified for the Super 8 stage, the ongoing contest will determine who tops the group.
