Somerset pulled off a thrilling win against Surrey on Thursday, September 12, in the County Championship Division 1 match hosted by Taunton. Surrey were at 95/3 with close to 20 overs remaining in the day's play. The target for Surrey was 221, which is why a draw seemed to be the most probable result.

However, Somerset's Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan had other plans. Leach started the collapse by dismissing the well-set duo of Ben Foakes (20) and Dom Sibley (56) in quick succession. Vaughan then got rid of Shakib Al Hasan, Tom Curran, and Cameron Steel to leave Surrey reeling at 101/8 after 67 overs.

Kemar Roach and Jordan Clark then stood like a wall to force the match into a draw. They batted for 10.4 overs without scoring a single run from the bat. Somerset conceded eight runs in those 64 balls before Leach dismissed Clark caught behind.

When number 11 batter Daniel Worrall came out to bat, the Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory placed all nine fielders near him. Leach trapped Worrall LBW on the final ball of the 78th over to complete a famous win for his team.

Leach (37-24-37-5) and Vaughan (32-15-38-5) were the heroes for Somerset.

Somerset inch closer to Surrey in the County Championship Division 1 points table

Courtesy of the 111-run victory against Surrey, Somerset now have 190 points to their name in the County Championship Division 1 standings. Somerset are second in the table, with five wins, one loss and six draws from 12 matches. Despite the loss, Surrey remain at the helm of the standings, having earned 198 points from 12 matches.

The tabletoppers will play their next fixture against Durham at The Oval from September 17 to 20. Meanwhile, Somerset will take on the ninth-placed Lancashire team in Manchester on the same dates. It will be interesting to see which county is at the top of the standings after the next round.
