Washington Freedom (WSF) captain Steve Smith smashed a monstrous six off Los Angeles Knight Riders' (LAKR) Andre Russell in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 at Church Street Park in Morrisville on Monday, July 15. The right-handed batter deposited the ball high and handsome out of the park for a 94-meter six.

The shot came in the fourth over of Washington’s run chase. Russell bowled a back-of-a-length delivery which Smith muscled away for a humongous six over deep mid-wicket as the ball flew into the crowd.

Steve Smith stayed unbeaten on 42 runs off 36 balls with the help of two sixes and as many boundaries. He is the third-highest leading run-getter in the tournament with 126 runs across four innings.


Steve Smith and Travis Head help Washington Freedom beat Los Angeles Knight Riders by 8 wickets

A clinical batting display from Steve Smith and Travis Head helped Washington Freedom beat the Los Angeles Knight Riders by eight wickets. Apart from Smith, Head smashed 54 runs off 32 deliveries, a knock laced with six maximums and two boundaries. Spencer Johnson and Shadley van Schalkwyk bagged one wicket each for LAKR.

Asked to bat first, the Sunil Narine-led side were bundled out for 129 in 18.4 overs. Saif Badar top scored with 35 off 28, comprising three sixes and one boundary. Russell and Johnson also chipped in with scores of 20 (12) and 16 (9), respectively.

Saurabh Netravalkar starred with the ball for Washington, returning with figures of 4/35, while Glenn Maxwell bagged three wickets. Lockie Ferguson also scalped two wickets.

With the win, Washington consolidated their top spot in the MLC 2024 points table. The Steve Smith-led side have three wins in four games and a no-result against Texas Super Kings. They will next lock horns with MI New York at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Tuesday, July 16.

On the other hand, the Los Angeles-based franchise are fifth in the sixth-team tournament with a solitary win in their first five games. They will play Seattle Orcas and MI New York in their last two league games in Morrisville and Dallas on July 17 (Wednesday) and 21 (Sunday), respectively.
