Young off-spinner Shoaib Bashir starred with 5-41 from 11.1 overs as England hammered West Indies by 241 runs at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday, July 21 in the second Test of the three-match series. The 20-year-old claimed the last two wickets to fall in the match as England bowled out West Indies for 143 in 36.1 overs after setting them a target of 385.

Resuming their second innings on 248-3, England ended up posting 425 as Joe Root top-scored with 122 off 178, while Harry Brook hammered 109 off 132. Bashir then ran through West Indies' batting line, spinning a web around the visitors.

Fittingly, the youngster claimed the last two wickets to fall in the match, also completing a well-deserved five-fer in the process. Amid another of those all too familiar West Indies batting collapses, seasoned all-rounder Jason Holder was offering some resistance.

It was Bashir who ended Holder's stay at the crease, cleaning him up for 37 with a flat and full delivery outside off. The ball turned in sharply and beat the edge of Holder's bat. The England off-spinner then brought the curtains down on the contest, knocking over last man Shamar Joseph for 8. The left-hander attempted to slog a full and straight delivery, but completely missed the ball and was bowled.

Earlier in the innings, the spinner also dismissed Kirk McKenzie (1), Kavem Hodge (0) and Alick Athanaze (1). McKenzie was caught behind playing a loose stroke outside off. First-innings centurion Hodge was trapped lbw as he looked to hit one across the line but missed the ball altogether. McKenzie was done in by drift, dip and turn and only managed to nick the ball to slip.

While Bashir was undoubtedly the star of the show with the ball for England, the pace bowlers also did well. Chris Woakes and Gus Atkinson picked up two wickets each, while Mark Wood claimed one.

Bashir has made an impressive start to his Test career

Only 20, Somerset off-spinner Bashir has made an impactful start to his Test career. After five matches, he has 24 wickets to his name at an average of 29.83, with three five-wicket hauls.

The spinner made his debut on the tour of India earlier this year. Playing in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, he registered figures of 3-138 in the first innings and 1-58 in the second. In the fourth Test of the series in Rajkot, he claimed eight wickets, picking up 5-119 in the first innings and 3-79 in the second.

The youngster picked up the second five-fer of his short Test career in Dharamsala, registering figures of 5-173 from 46.1 overs. India, however, won the Test by an innings and 64 runs.
