Rishabh Pant missed out on a well-deserved century in the first Test between India and New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Day 4 (Saturday, October 19). The left-handed batter was looking good for his seventh Test ton but chopped one back onto the stumps on 99 (105). His innings comprised five sixes and nine boundaries.

The heartbreaking dismissal for the fans came in the 89th over of India’s second innings. William O’Rourke bowled back of a length ball and Pant tried to play a cut but was done by the extra bounce on offer. The ball hit the splice of the bat and crashed onto the stumps.

With the dismissal, Pant missed out on the golden opportunity to go past former India captain MS Dhoni (six tons) for the most tons by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests.

Watch the wicket below:

Rishabh Pant became the fourth wicketkeeper after Brendon McCullum (vs SL in 2005), Dhoni (vs ENG in 2012), and Jonny Bairstow (vs SA in 2017) to depart on 99 in Test cricket. The 26-year-old now has seven dismissals in the 90s, the third most for India in the format after Sachin Tendulkar (10) and Rahul Dravid (nine).

The Uttarkhand-born player has been in exceptional form since his comeback to Tests. He recently slammed his sixth ton versus Bangladesh on his return to the format after 18-plus months.
