Northamptonshire opener Prithvi Shaw missed out on a well-deserved century against Durham in the One Day Cup game at Chester-le-street on Friday, August 2. The right-hander departed for 97 runs off 71 balls, an innings laced with one six and 16 boundaries. During his impressive knock, Shaw shared a 95-run partnership with George Barlett for the second wicket.

The dismissal came off the 23rd over of Northants’ innings. Scott Borthwick bowled a flighted delivery and Shaw kept for a sweep shot down the square leg. He, however, only managed a top edge that flew to Mitchell Killen at short fine.

Sharing the video, Durham’s official handle wrote on X:

“We needed that! Prithvi Shaw departs for 97.”

Prithvi Shaw returned with scores of 9, 40, and 76 in his three innings for Northamptonshire in the ongoing season of One Day Cup. The Mumbai batter was brilliant last season, scoring 429 runs in four innings with the help of a double century before sustaining an injury.

“He should be someone that’s in every team” – Ricky Ponting unimpressed with Prithvi Shaw’s failures in IPL and international cricket

Former Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting recently expressed his concerns about Prithvi Shaw for his failing to cement his place in the franchise's playing XI. He told Cricbuzz (via The Times of India):

"I mean to start with I don't like talking about individual players, but Prithvi shouldn't be an outlier. He should be someone that's in every team; the first pick in most teams with the skill that he's got. He's had a chance to represent India as a youngster, making a hundred on his Test debut.
"And as you say, halfway through this year, we couldn't find a slot for him in our DC team. So that's disappointing for me as a coach not to be able to make certain players better and get the best out of them. But sometimes there's only so much you can give and so many times you can try,” he added.

Shaw managed to play just eight games each in his last two IPL seasons, scoring 106 and 198 runs in the 2023 and 2024 editions, respectively. The 24-year-old’s last international game, his only T20I, came in July 2021.
