RCB overcome CSK challenge to seal IPL 2024 playoffs spot

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings went head to head for the fourth and final IPL 2024 playoffs spot at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on May 18. Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals had already secured their respective spots in the top four by then.

RCB batters stepped up to the occasion after being put in to bat first. Captain Faf du Plessis top-scored with a 39-ball 54 while Virat Kohli (47) and Rajat Patidar (41) also played crucial knocks. Cameron Green, Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell came up with respective quickfire innings to take their side to 218-5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 201 runs for a place in the playoffs, the Super Kings were off to the worst possible start. They lost skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for a golden duck on the first ball of the chase. Adding to their woes, hard-hitting Daryl Mitchell departed in just the third over with just 19 runs on the board.

Despite Rachin Ravindra's half-century and valuable knocks from Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni, the visitors fell well short of the target and also failed to qualify for the playoffs.
