Matt Henry provided an early breakthrough for New Zealand, dismissing Ravichandran Ashwin straight after Lunch in the ongoing first Test against India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Day 2 (Thursday, October 17). The dismissal left the Men in Blue reeling at 34/7.

The dismissal took place in the 24th over of India’s first innings. Henry bowled a good length delivery on off-stump and Ashwin looked tentative while facing the first ball. He tried to stay low but the ball got enough bounce on offer led to an outside edge before flying towards the gully. Glenn Phillips completed an easy catch.

Ravichandran Ashwin fifth Indian batter to register a duck as New Zealand leave India in shambles

Ravichandran Ashwin was the fifth Indian batter to depart for a duck as New Zealand dismantled India on Day 2. Virat Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja also departed without bothering the scorers in a forgetful opening session.

Other top-order batters also failed to deliver with skipper Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant departing for 2 (16), 13 (63), and 20 (49), respectively. The downfall came as play resumed on Day 2 after the opening day was washed out due to rain.

At the time of writing, the hosts were 40-9, with Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj at the crease. Matt Henry and William O'Rourke have bagged four wickets each for the visitors so far.

New Zealand hold the unwanted record for the lowest total (26 all out vs England in 1955) in Test cricket. India’s lowest innings total was 36 all out against Australia in 2020.

This is the second time Team India have faced collapse in back-to-back Test series. They were reduced to 144/6 vs Bangladesh in the first Test. The downfall comes as a wake-up call for India ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia later this year.

New Zealand are yet to win a Test series in India. The Men in Blue beat the Kiwis by a 1-0 margin when the two teams last met in the 2021-22 series.
